We spent 3 months living in Hoi An tracking all our expenses and we’ll share all of the cost of living details you need, then a comparison between Chiang Mai, where we spent 4 months.

✈ Don’t just holiday to Vietnam, learn how to live there:

Hoi An is the highlight of Vietnam, it’s a bit tricky to get established and settle in but it’s a great way of life, beautiful place, costs are low and there are plenty of other digital nomads.

Chiang Mai is such a great place, and with low living costs we can’t recommend starting your Digital Nomad journey in Thailand any more because it’s just a little easier to get apartments and settle in.

Either way, travel to both and if you’re looking to retire it’s a tough pick between the two!

First Time in VIETNAM - Exploring Ho Chi Minh City

We landed in bustling Ho Chi Minh City for our first time in Vietnam! We had a great time exploring Ho Chi Minh City and will be traveling Vietnam for the next 28 days. Without a real plan, we visited Ho Chi Minh Square to learn some history of Ho Chi Minh City. We also played frogger with the thousands of motorbikes trying to cross the streets, haha.

Our first stop after the 2 hour travel to Vietnam from Malaysia was Ho Chi Minh Square. We got stopped by some local Vietnamese scouts who tried to help teach us a Vietnamese language phrase. We sucked really badly but they were nice and persistent. Finally, Ryan spoke Vietnamese! Ho Chi Minh Square is located in District 1 Saigon which is right in the middle of the city. District 1 Ho Chi Minh City is also the main tourist hub in HCM, Vietnam.

We aren’t sure if it’s better to call the city Saigon Vietnam or Ho Chi Minh Vietnam, so please leave us a comment down below and let us know which one is correct! While walking the streets and exploring Ho Chi Minh City, we got thirsty and decided to try Vietnamese coffee for the first time. Stacia loved the Vietnamese coffee but since it’s 2x stronger than regular coffee she couldn’t finish the whole thing.

Before finding the best things to do in Ho Chi Minh, we decided we wanted to get a feel for local life in Saigon. We quickly saw that the traffic in Ho Chi Minh City is a BIG part of daily life so we decided to test our luck crossing the busy streets. I can’t put into words how busy the streets of Saigon are, so you’ll just have to watch the video to see for yourself. It was a true frogger moment!

Being Americans in Vietnam, we are very interested in the war history of the Vietnam War. We were told there is an American War museum we need to check out which we will do off camera to spare sharing some deep emotional stuff with you guys. There are so many things to do in Saigon we can’t wait to explore the city for the month! If you have any suggestions for things to do in Vietnam, please leave a comment down below.

We have uploaded Vietnamese subtitles for any of you who would like to read in Vietnamese. We hope to hear from you guys in the comments and thanks for watching our first Vietnam travel vlog!

* We’re Ryan & Stacia from DeathbyVlog. Unlike other travel vloggers, we live and work in a different country each month with a moderate housing budget. Sorry, but no backpacker lifestyle here! Our channel will show you what it’s like to live abroad while exploring top tourist destinations and hidden gems. We will show you mouthwatering local food tours, provide history on each destination, and cinematic broll for all of you film lovers. Each month we rent an apartment or airbnb in a different city or country, so follow along on this journey and learn about countries around the world. We hope you enjoy our travel vlog, don’t forget to subscribe!

So I'm currently in Bangkok and get 900 month income but with the exchange rate I am only seeing about 27k month. From that my rent water and electric comes out to around 18k month have car payment of 6500 month internet of 750 month and contacts 280 month. I barely have enough to live on after pay my bills. Would Vietnam be a cheaper option for me? As for what I do I don't drink or smoke or drink coffee I am not really a night life type of person. I would need my own big bike or car. I eat some local foods but prefer mostly western and Italian foods. Though never been to Vietnam before so I can't speak about their food for eating. As for Asia food I don't care too much for Thai or Philippine food I'd prefer more along the lines of Chinese food. As for a place a decent 1 bedroom apartment with my own internet preferably fiber connection with atleaet 100 down and up speeds. Good mobile internet as well. Oh by the way by big bike I mean like r3 or bigger as I could settle for an r3 if had too. And for a car has to be a manual will not do an automatic

Although Saigon has been renamed, it is still a much more familiar name than Ho Chi Minh, so people still use that name

Tôi nghĩ hai người k cần phải nói nhiều về vấn đề chính trị, VN đang rất ổn . You should not talk about politics too much, because Americans are different from Vietnamese. Vietnam is very good

Think you got the part where People revere Ho Chi Minh, that's why Saigon's name is changed to HCMC and the HCM Statues around Saigon, yeah that part is probably way off base. I've met many Saigonese in Saigon and outside of Vietnam. They loath the Northerners, not HCM per se', but they have NO LOVE for HCM. They hate it that Saigon is renamed HCMC, they disagree with Hanoi'ans deeply, and regard Hanoi'ans as Insular. Even their Vietnamese are spoken in a different dialect.

The city's name change and HCM statues are propaganda tools, a form of subversion, to the Saigonese. They live in relative peace with the North (ruling class) because they've forgotten what they were fighting over. It's now an "acceptance" with a mild to moderate irritant feel rather than "revere".

HCM is a mass murderer not a good guy Saigon was renamed on 30/04/1975 right after vietnamese comnunist took over south Vietnam

The thing about Vietnam is the that there are tons of colorful lighting and cafes that stay open really late so night out activities is awesome

  25. Tri Minh NguyenAugust 14, 2019 at 1:19 am

When you cross the street in Vietnam, you should wait for the red light, and when you walk stroght through the middle of the road where there're aren't any light just put your hands up to give them a signal and walk at a medium speed confidently and don't stop. People that are not used to it usually freak out and stop and walk again and the drivers are confuse and they go again so they might hit you.

Those kids explain the sentence really badly. It means that the sister pick out the bad parts from the vegetable and the younger sibling is cooking the vegetable that is picked. That sentence was meant to be a tounge twister thing. Hearing those kids say cooking the garbage I'm like "What the hell?!"

  27. Tri Minh NguyenAugust 14, 2019 at 2:35 am

I think that War is never a good thing and there is no good or bad in wars, they are just differents views but they fight for that. So in the war, both sides wanted to reunite the country so bone was BAD but they are violent

If American has Washington president.,My country has Ho CHi mInh president..
THe media can say bad for Hồ Chí mInh president but in the heart of A lots Vietnamese people he is admired. .

We do not dropped bombs in American…Why they can say..The communist is bad..Do you know how many tons of bombs which American dropped in our Hanoi capital to force him to obey American in the war from 1954 to 1975?THat is human right? And in that case..You think A president will be coward to say..Yes Yes Sir..i give this country to you?You are from a country where there are called..developed country..You are ok if i say the truth my opinion?
He welcome all of you to my country..the same us…My country got the pain of bombs and war more 100 years and we are building my country better..Welcome all of you to visit my country..But a president is protected by public..We are not stupid to not know who is bad or good for my country….
that is my opinion when i see your opinion..And have fun because you are happy in this city…
sorry.I am A vietnamese citizen..welcome foreigners and protect my country..that is our duty..
